When did u come up with concept for “Kill the Monsters” & how did you develop the screenplay?
A few years back, I was rereading ANIMAL FARM. It inspired me to use allegory to tell the story of the evolution of democracy in the US and ask a few pointed questions about its efficacy. I began writing it during the gridlock of the Obama years and finished post-production after Trump’s victory. I used milestones in US history to inspire the plot points in the film.
Had u ever written and directed a feature before? What experience did u have?
I studied theatre and film in college and made a couple of micro-budget films prior.
How did u get funding and how long did it take from concept to writing to funding to shooting to post? (In those stages)
For micro-budget films, you can either find one investor or many. I spend a while writing/revising scripts before I ever try to get them made. This film was unusual in that it was a 26 day shoot spread out over a calendar year. Post takes a few months usually.
Hiow did u find talent and crew?
Auditions and recommendations. Some of the talent I have worked with before. My most important collaborator, my DP Andrew Huebscher, I knew socially prior and hoped we’d have the opportunity to work together.
What did you shoot with?
ARRI AMIRA, ARRI ALEXA MINI, Sony A7S, Sony A7RII
A favorite memory of the process so far?
Working with Andrew! Also getting to shoot a feature film on the road from NYC to LA.
Worse moment of the process so far?
Dealing with actors’ schedules and raising the funding.
What festivals have u been in and when/where will the public be able to see the film?
We debuted at Frameline in 2018 and have played at over two dozen festivals domestically and abroad. We opened theatrically that December. The film will soon be available on streaming platforms and DVD.
How did u learn to act?
I studied Practical Aesthetics at The Atlantic Theatre Acting School, which was founded by David Mamet and William H. Macy. It’s very helpful having a background in acting when directing performances.
Any final thoughts?
